Streaming’s Impact on University Students: Productivity vs. Entertainment

Streaming platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and Kick have become increasingly popular among university students, offering entertainment and a sense of community. Prominent streamers such as Kai Cenat, Duke Dennis, and Fanum have cultivated massive audiences, but their rise underscores a challenge for students: balancing streaming entertainment with academic and personal responsibilities.

The Appeal of Streaming
For students, streamers provide relatable content, humor, and interaction, making their platforms a go-to source for relaxation. Creators like Kai Cenat are celebrated for their humor and high-energy streams, while Duke Dennis and Fanum bring cultural relevance and personal engagement, making students feel connected to a broader community.

The Downsides
However, this entertainment often comes at a cost. Streaming can be a significant distraction, with endless live and recorded content consuming valuable time. For example, binge-watching streams during study breaks can turn into hours of procrastination. Furthermore, the parasocial relationships students form with streamers may lead to unrealistic expectations of personal relationships.
